The above photo was done safely with a zoom from the side. I don't venture onto shelf ice ever.
In a mere 24 seconds Notice how with the same pressure sometimes just a little ice breaks away. Sometimes A MASSIVE AMOUNT breaks away. DON'T HIKE ON IT!
SHELF ICE is so cOmPleX and so BEAUTIFUL. The complexity makes it DEADLY. PLEASE, Please, please DO NOT go anywhere close to the ice. YOU don't know if you are on the beach or merely sand covering SHELF ICE.
A few things to consider:
Shelf ice is a bridge to death built by the low bidder.
Shelf ice looks massively strong like the rock of Gibraltar. It is an imposter. It is fake.
Shelf ice is eroded by:
A. Waves
B. Wind
C. Wake
YOUR LIFE will be stunted.
(WARNING: Please don't read this if you are squeamish as it describes something unsettling-- DEATH.)
(It was so troubling to write this. -Ron)

If you are on smooth flat ice and you are an ice fisherman and you find the ice cracking and giving way and fall in, if you are holding a pole grab it with both hands and hold it parallel to the ice to hopefully prevent you from falling through a hole in the ice. THROW yourself on your back. KICK YOUR LEGS LIKE HELL to push yourself over ice in the direction from where you had been coming from. If it breaks again keep kicking and try again. Once you are on solid ice keep pushing yourself back away from the hole. Be prepared for it to break again and repeat this process. Roll over and smoothly get up and quickly get away to land. Where is the beach? Where is the last dune?
Do you see a face and a snow arm and hand?
Always carry paracord in your backpack for emergencies!
