Take the Glenwood Dunes Trail east to the National Park Campground. Go north on Broadway through the Great Marsh to Beverly Drive. The go west all the way to just before Kemil Road (State Park East Road) and take the abandoned road through the National Park to the Calumet Trail and west to Kemil Road and then south across Route 12 to the USGS Lake Michigan Ecological Research Station

SNOWSHOE CHALLENGE

***POSTPONED***,On 12/23/2022, FRIDAY, Christmas Eve Eve (CEE), at 6:00 PM CST,

[NOT Christmas Eve! ], the most compassionate and capable hikers will be meeting outside the Nature Center of the Indiana Dunes State Park. Google Map pin for the Nature Center: https://goo.gl/maps/8z23i3W61Np114Ma8

ARRIVE at 5:45 PM because at 6:01 PM we are hiking because other's time is precious.

IF the front gate is charging fees on 12/23/2022 then Indiana residents pay $7 and out-of-state residents pay $12. My guess at 5:45 PM they will NOT be collecting gate fees. My hikes are always FREE!

We will take Trail 10 to the Trail 2 boardwalk where we will sing to the beavers. Then we will listen to various Christmas music as return to the Nature Center via Trail 2. There is also a Barred Owl on the route who talked with us last year, as he heard the music, The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Architecture Hike

A hike (which is defined as a long walk) in downtown Chicago starting at the Southeast corner of the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Randolph. We will be hiking around to look at some significant buildings including the building with the first observation deck in Chicago, Grant Park, a bridge, and a river front. I will point out and talk briefly about them and we have the opportunity for some fantastic photos. It is flat as a waffle on concrete and asphalt. Bring your smartphone/camera with fully charged batteries and expect to probably take 50-100 photos/videos.

Community Hike @ Meadowbrook, Shirley Heinze Land Trust Nature Preserves

Take a hike with Shirley Heinze Land Trust! Learn all about the Valparaiso Moraine, our connection to the Lake Michigan Watershed, and the changing of the seasons on Saturday, November 19 starting at 10am.

We will meet under the pavilion at Meadowbrook Nature Preserve, just north of the parking lot. Our Programs Coordinator, Mari Patis, will lead you through the many trails that meander through the preserve. This hike is kid- and pet-friendly.

As the weather cools, be sure to wear enough layers as well as sturdy hiking boots. The trails at Meadowbrook vary from flat gravel and dirt trails to a moderate level of stairs and inclines.

Cinematography Basics using Apple Technologies Workshop

Participants are invited to a workshop by Ron Seman, for a Cinematography Basics using Apple Technologies Workshop. It will include basic instructions on:

Why/when/how one would use different iPhone modes of TIME-LAPSE, SLO-MO, Cinematic, Video, and Screen Recording.

The use of various options in the modes including flash, night mode, action, HD 30, HD 60, 4K 24, 4K 30, 4K 60, and front facing camera lenses and the rear facing selfie lens and more.\

The apps of Photos, iMovie, and Google Photos will be reviewed and their role will be demonstrated. Editing, formatting, rotating, transitions, optional audio tracks, and other options will be demonstrated on an iPhone, and optionally on an iPad, Macbook, and iMac.

These basic principles apply to Android based smartphones, tablets, and computers as well; however, time does not permit the demonstration and discussion of both.

One can learn to make very high quality movies of nature, in the greatest biodiversity density in America at the Indiana Dunes, the Museum of Nature and Industry, as well as in one's homes for holiday movies, sports, vlogging and more. This is a great hobby which the whole family or friends can contribute to and participate in. Get motivated! Get creative! Get brainstorming! Get to the workshop!

We will have this workshop in motion on a hike! We will start the hike at 10:00 AM CST from the front entrance of the Pavilion at the Indiana Dunes State park. We will discuss and do videos and photos along the hike. Then those videos can be submitted for display to others via a Google Photos album for further discussion. We will proceed north to the beach and then west to the Beach West Lot then up to Bird Observation Platform and then onto Trail 3 for a loop and back to the Pavilion. It is considered flat and easy but does have about 75 stairs up from the Beach West Lot

Don't forget to bring your fully charged iPhone and/or iPad and please dress for the weather. As of 11/2/22 the weather forecast for Sunday, 11/6/22, is sunny with a low of 46 F to 64 F in the afternoon

The House of Tomorrow on Lake Front Drive in the town of Beverly Shores is the creation of Chicago architect George Fred Keck. The first floor was designed as the service area, originally containing the garage and an airplane hangar. World's Fair optimists assumed every future family would own an airplane. The second and third floors were the essence of the house, containing the main living spaces and a solarium. The three-story, steel-framed building was originally clad in glass on the second and third floors. Keck defied mechanical engineers, who said that due to the expansive use of glass the house couldn't be heated, and installed a floor to ceiling "curtain wall system". Instead of heat loss during the winter, the level of solar heat gain actually reduced the need for mechanical heating. During the summer the solar gain was too great for the home's revolutionary air-conditioning system to handle, and it failed. When Robert Bartlett moved the house from Chicago to Beverly Shores after the world's fair, he replaced the glass walls with operable windows to allow for proper air circulation.

At 7:30 AM CST we leave. Depending how many respond I have three more seats in my 4Runner. First text to 1-219-370-9119 gets them.

It takes about 2 hours driving and we take I94 onto the I294 TOLL ROAD around Chicago and then back onto I94. It is a simple route with Illinois drivers. You can use an iPass or other Indiana electronic toll device to drive through. One can also pay the tolls online.

(I drove over a million miles around Chicago and it isn’t a big deal to me. To others it is a frantic nightmare. We obey the speed limit essentially.)

You certainly don’t need me. I went by myself last year and spent 10 AM - 7 PM there. But that is just adventurous Ron.

2. First other three can ride in my 4Runner.

3. You can follow me at 7:30 AM

4. You can drive 45 MPH, the legal lower limit and just go yourself.

5. You don’t go but MUST hike my ALL DUNE CHALLENGE, 19.11

Miles. That would be EASIER than the grueling fair.

The cost at the gate or online is $30 per person. They don’t allow one to bring in food or water. They may allow you to bring in one disposable water bottle. They have a variety of food there. It is more expensive than McDonalds and less expensive than the Chez Paul as seen in the Blues Brothers.

MEET in the northern most part of the parking lot near near the men and womens bathroom and electrical charging stations for cars. This is NOT the huge bathhouse near the beach. Baldy is closed unless a Park Ranger leads you up to the top. You should arrive by 12:30 PM as the parking lot fills up and there is no overflow parking unless you want to park towards the Outlet Mall and walk 1 mile alongside of Route 12, which you do NOT want to do.

This hike is led by Indiana Dunes National Park. It is not forecast to rain on Sunday. It gives one the opportunity to see the top and listen to a Park Ranger talk.

You do need an Indiana Dunes National Park pass to park at any Indiana Dunes National Park location and they badly need the money to do all kinds of cool enhancements and importance maintenance.

THIS HIKE is excellent because Pinhook Bog is closed unless a Park Ranger leads you past the electrified fence. Okay it is not electrified. It is a small parking lot with room for maybe 20 or so ways to cram cars in. Officially there are only about 12 parking spots.

Completed,National Park Hike,05/27/22, Friday, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM, Mt. Baldy Sunset Hike on top of Mt. Baldy! THIS HIKE is excellent because the top of Mt. Baldy is closed unless a Park Ranger leads you up to the top. This is the first sunset hike of the year and it is a holiday weekend. You should arrive by 6:30 PM as the parking lot fills up and there is no overflow parking unless you want to park towards the Outlet Mall and walk 1 mile alongside of Route 12, which you do NOT want to do.

This hike is led by Indiana Dunes National Park and I will be the caboose at the back of the hike. It is not forecast to rain on Friday evening, which doesn't mean much as forecasters were the inventors of fake news. I remember the last time it rained in the morning and it cleared up and it was fantastic! Even if it is cloudy and/or rainy it gives one the opportunity to see the top and listen to a Park Ranger talk and meet me there and listen to what I might add to their talk when they are not talking. Two talks for the price of nothing.

I have hiked here MORE THAN ANY OF THE NATURE AREA because it is great and I live several hundred feet from here and walked my legendary dog Aslan there so many days a week. This was often a hike at sunrise or as an after hike. It has the GREATEST quantity of Trillium flowers when they are in season like April/May.

Located along the banks of Sand Creek, J. Timothy Ritchie Nature Preserve is on the northeast side of Chesterton, off Indian Boundary and Wake Robin Drive.

It is found on Google Maps and it is at the south end of Violet Avenue in Chesterton. It is east of the Jewels grocery store about a mile to give you an idea. You will ACTUALLY DRIVE INTO THE FOREST and park in it.

From Porter County's program description: Join Ron Seman (Indiana Master Naturalist) at Brincka Cross on May 13th for our first Moonlight Hike!

Gather near the Brincka Cross house at 7:15pm. The hike will begin at 7:30pm to take in the sunset through the trees on the property. You'll have the option to do another lap to see the property at twilight and then a third lap to walk the property in the dark. The hike will be utilizing Trail 7.

The trails at Brincka Cross are crushed aggregate.

We ask that children be 7+ and that strollers and pets are left at home.

Participation is limited to 40 people.

CLOSED 01/21/22, Friday, 10 AM - 1:30 PM, HIKE Central Avenue Beach area and forest trails. TAKE U.S. Route 12 east from Highway 49 through Beverly Shores and into the Town of Pines. Continue until Central Avenue and turn left, north, and drive one mile right into the parking lot where we will meet at 9:59 AM and begin the hike at 10 AM. The weather is suppose to be 18F - 23F over that time with winds 3-5 MPH.

The Indiana Dunes National Park has many locations where there are different ecosystems with great beauty, diversity, and trail types. A FAVORITE is Central Avenue Beach which is located in Beverly Shores but often accessed by driving east from Indiana Highway 49 past Broadway in Beverly Shores where the South Shore Station is and past the post office and then past a small brown Indiana Dunes National Park -Central Avenue where you turn left (north) and proceed about one mile. The surface is asphalt but the road goes up and down slightly because the beach nourishment require 55,000 tons of sand brought in by heavy duty trucks.
